Day on the Hill 2013

February 25, 2013

March 13, 2013; 10 am –  12 noon

“Democracy Is Not a Spectator Sport” is the theme of the Massachusetts League’s annual Day on the Hill lobbying day at the State House on Wednesday, March 13.  The focus will be on how to be an effective advocate on League-supported issues with your State Senators and Representatives.  The Day on the Hill program runs from 10 a.m. to noon in the Gardner Auditorium at the State House.

Please plan to come; after the program, LWVN members will meet with members of our state delegation to discuss League-supported legislation. The more people who visit their legislators, the more influence the League has.  There’s strength in numbers.

Rep. Thomas Conroy will use an upcoming piece of legislation to illustrate the process of drafting legislation, getting sponsors, and the role advocacy plays, including how the state and local Leagues can be effective in presenting their positions on legislation.  A second speaker from an advocacy organization will discuss the issue from that point of view.

The state League’s legislative specialists will talk briefly about key bills expected in this session of the legislature. Details on the bills, including specific talking points, will be distributed to local Leagues before Day on the Hill, so you will have the information you need to make the case with your legislators.

Please email info@lwvnewton.org if you would like to join other LWVN members; we will try to travel into Boston together via T or carpool.

For more information, see the Day on the Hill flyer.

LWVN Member Meeting – League Vote on Newton’s Override Proposal

January 2, 2013

Join the League on Thursday, January 10, as we vote whether to support Newton’s override proposal.

Please bring your questions, concerns, and opinions.

The meeting will be held from 7:00-8:30pm (note new end time), at the Waban Library, 1608 Beacon Street, Waban.

This will be an all-member meeting, per our bylaws, to vote on whether to amend our program for this year and take a position in support of the override proposal. With a vote to approve, the League would then be able to advocate on behalf of the override.

Also, according to our bylaws, we need a quorum of 25 members in order to take this vote. Please be sure to attend!

Information about the override can be found on the City’s website, a LWVN FAQ about Newton’s budget process can be found below, and more information is included in the LWVN Override Outline.

RSVP or more information at info@lwvnewton.org.
