On October 13, 20205, LWVN submitted comments to the Election Assistance Commission in opposition to America First Legal’s petition to require documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) for anyone using the federal voter registration form. We fundamentally disagree with the petition about the utility, legality, and tangible impact of documentary proof of citizenship requirements on the following grounds:
- It is already unlawful for non-citizens to register and vote in federal or state elections.
- DPOC requirements could prevent Americans from voting
- It would impose additional fiscal and resources burden on election officials
- The National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) does not allow the EAC to add a DPOC requirement
- The EAC is subject to the strict standards of the NVRA in assessing this petition

This is a busy time of year for our Voter Service team. We will be at Village Days and other city-wide events throughout the fall season. With a municipal election coming up, we want to register as many residents as possible, and inform as many voters as possible.
