LWVN/NewTV Mayoral Candidates’ Forum on August 9th at 7:30 pm

LWVN and NewTV are collaborating on a series of candidates’ forums this fall, for both the preliminary and general municipal elections.  Our first forum is for all 7 Mayoral candidates, on August 9th, starting at 7:30 pm.  Audience members can watch the live feed in the NewTV conference room, or overflow room if needed.  Light refreshments will be served.

Please note, there is no live audience in the studio.  The program will be available on NewTV.org as soon as possible, as well as broadcast as often as possible on NewTV.

If you are not supporting any of the candidates and can volunteer to help us on Wednesday, please email info@lwvnewton.org.

Questions Needed for Mayoral Forum and Ward 1 Ward Councilor Forum

LWVN is now collecting questions for the August 9th Mayoral Candidates’ Forum as well as the upcoming Ward 1 Ward Councilor Candidates’ Forum.   Please note our question sorters may need to combine similar questions in order to cover as many topics as possible–so you may not hear your exact question being asked, but hopefully we can cover the topic.  Candidates are not given the questions before the event.

We recommend that your question(s) be short and direct, so that the candidates will address the topic you are asking about.  Feel free to submit ALL your questions to info@lwvnewton.org.

Volunteers Needed for Candidates’ Forums and Vote411 Guide

Candidates aren’t the only ones preparing for the LWVN/NewTV forums and voters’ guide!  We are also busy and could use volunteers to help with:

  • sorting questions from about 6 pm on August 9th
  • being a timekeeper during this forum (staying in the studio for the entire program)
  • greeting visitors and helping clean up on August 9th
  • helping organize VOTE411, as we do this for the first time

Volunteers need to be non-partisan in this race, meaning that they are not supporting any of the candidates who will be a part of the forum.  If you can help, please contact info@lwvnewton.org.

LWVMA Climate and Energy Solutions Series Continues

The LWVMA Steering Committee for Environmental Action and Advocacy, in partnership with local Leagues, is presenting a series of regional forums in 2017. The first forum of the LWVMA Climate and Energy Solutions Series, “On the Path to 100% Renewable Energy,” was held in Worcester May 2, co-sponsored by the Worcester Area LWV. Four forums are planned for the fall in Boston, Winchester, Lexington and Falmouth.

We will kick off the series in the fall with a forum at the New England Aquarium’s Omni Theater Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. This event is part of the Aquarium’s Lecture Series, and is co-sponsored by LWVMA, the Aquarium, and the UMass Boston School for the Environment. The speaker, Dr. Ellen Douglas, will address extreme events and climate change. She will discuss observations of our changing climate, what changes may be in the future for Boston and beyond, and plans for adapting to these changes.

The remaining forums are planned for Winchester Oct. 4 (7 p.m., refreshments at 6:30 p.m.), with a presentation on the Health Benefits of Carbon Pricing; Lexington Oct. 19 (7 p.m.), with a discussion of greening the grid; and Falmouth (date and time TBD).
