June 9, 2019

At our recent Annual Meeting, members voted to support the resolution below, to be presented at the LWVMA Convention in Westford with other Leagues from around the state.

Climate Emergency Resolution

Unanimously approved by LWVMA Environmental Action and Advocacy Committee, May 22, 2019 for submission to the LWVMA Convention, June 7-8, 2019.

Whereas on October 8, 2018, the United Nations released a special report that projected that limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius this century will require an unprecedented transformation of every sector of the global economy over the next 12 years; and

Whereas on November 23, 2018, the U.S. Fourth National Climate Assessment was issued, which detailed the massive threat that climate change poses to the American economy and underscored the need for emergency climate action at all levels of government; and Read more →

3rd Annual Gas Leak Tagging Event on April 28th, 9 am from Mothers Out Front

April 21, 2019

Join Newton MothersOutFront at the 3rd Annual Gas Leak Tagging Event. April 28, 9am, part of Newton Serves Day of Community Service.

Natural gas is leaking near homes, schools & businesses. Natural gas is 95% methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Gas leaks are hazardous because they: can explode, damage our health, kill trees.

Gas leaks overwhelm efforts to reduce greenhouse gas. Most of our gas contains fracking chemicals. Utilities charge you for the lost gas!

LWVMA Climate and Energy Solutions Series Webinar: Driving Down Emissions

April 14, 2019

DRIVING DOWN EMISSIONS:
Massachusetts and the
Regional Transportation and Climate Initiative
Tuesday April 23, 2019
4:00pm-5:00pm
Representative Lori Ehrlich,
Massachusetts House of Representatives and
Jordan Stutt,
Carbon Programs Director for Regional and State Initiatives, Acadia Center

The speakers will discuss:

  • What the Transportation and Climate Initiative is and why it is important
  • State legislative efforts led by Representative Lori Ehrlich to guide development of a
    sustainable and equitable plan
  • Followed by Q & A

The latest science reports leave no doubt that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is essential if we are to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Emissions from transportation account for 39% of total emissions in the New England region. In
December 2018, nine northeastern states and the District of Columbia announced an agreement to work collaboratively on a regional plan to reduce emissions from the transportation sector. Massachusetts was one of the first states to join.

Registration for the webinar is required. Register at http://bit.ly/TCI_Webinar.

“Green New Deal” Letter Talking Points from LWVUS

April 12, 2019

LWVUS joined a January 10th letter with more than 600 organizations urging Congress to hold hearings and openly debate legislation about climate change in response to the momentum across the country to address this important issue. LWVUS provides these talking points to Leagues about our engagement with a possible “Green New Deal” and climate change policy more generally. These points are meant to inform Leagues of the activities of LWVUS and can be used by individual Leagues in their messaging on this subject.
