Meet the Charter Commission Candidates–October 14th and 21st

All Newton voters are invited to meet candidates for the Charter Commission at two LWVN events:

  • October 14th at Newton North High School (in the cafeteria) from 7-9 p.m.
  • October 21st at Newton South High School (in the cafeteria) from 7-9 p.m.

Join us for these open houses where voters can talk with candidates directly.  The LWVN Charter Commission Voters’ Guide will also be available at these events.

Send us your questions!

The League of Women Voters of Newton (LWVN) and NewTV are once again co-sponsoring Candidates’ Forums for the 2015 municipal election. All the following forums will take place in NewTV Studios, 23 Needham Street, Newton Highlands.

Please send us your questions for the candidates at! We ask that they be relevant to all the candidates in a particular race and be as short as possible. Please note that LWVN might shorten some questions or combine others that are similar, so it’s possible that your particular question isn’t used exactly as submitted. We do try to cover all topics submitted to us.

Candidate Forum Schedule:

October 7:     Ward 5 Aldermen-at-Large, 5:30 p.m.

October 8:     Ward 5 School Committee, 6:00 p.m.

                        Ward 3 Aldermen-at-Large, 7:00 p.m.

                        Ward 2 Aldermen-at-Large, 8:00 p.m.

October 22:   Ward 8 Aldermen-at-Large, 7 p.m.

While Alison Leary (Ward 1 Ward Alderman) and Margaret Albright (Ward 2 School Committee) were willing to participate in forums, candidates Allan Ciccone (Ward 1 Ward Alderman) and Cyrus Vaghar (Ward 2 School Committee) declined LWVN’s invitations. LWVN policy prohibits having “empty seat” candidates’ events, and so there will be no Candidates’ Forums for Ward 1 Ward Alderman and Ward 2 School Committee.

October Topic Meeting: Amending the US Constitution

LWVN October Topic/Consensus Meeting:
The Process for Amending the US Constitution

The LWV US Constitutional Amendment Study

Thursday Oct 15, 2015
11:30-1pm, NewTV Conference Room

Brown bag lunches welcome
Did you know that there are two different ways the US constitution can be amended — by congressional proposal or by convening a convention — and that a convention has never been used successfully?LWV US is conducting a study about the process of amending the U.S. constitution, and has asked local leagues across the country to learn about the topic and answer a series of questions. National’s study guide summarizes the study this way:

The question for us today is: what are the shared values and beliefs within the League – what consensus do we have – regarding the circumstances that might allow or compel the League to endorse a constitutional amendment or an Article V Convention?

Please join the LWV Newton to discuss the topic and contribute to Newton’s answers to the consensus question from LWV US.  We ask that you please review the study guide and the questions (below) to help us conduct the most effective meeting!
