Consensus Studies - Newton

Thank You for a Successful Transportation Forum

Thank you very much to presenters Stephanie Pollack, chair of the mayor’s Transportation Advisory Committee, Eric Bourassa, transportation manager for the Metropolitan Area Planning Council, Jacqueline Douglas, director of Livable Streets, and Candace Havens, Newton’s Director of Planning and Development, for the very successful forum on November 29, about transportation in Newton and the surrounding region. A standing-room-only audience heard about the findings of studies on Routes 128 and 9, the year-long study by the Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC), as well as transportation models that seek to balance the needs of all modes of transportation, including: pedestrians, bikes, cars and public transportation.

Land Use Review Consensus Meetings: March 2011 Topic Meeting

At last year’s Annual Meeting, the League membership approved a Land Use Study, including a review of LWVN’s Land Use positions.  Two meetings have been scheduled for League members to come to consensus on this important issue.

Daytime meeting: Wednesday, March 23, from 11:30am-1:30pm

Evening meeting: Thursday, March 24, from 7:00-9:00pm

We will be discussing/coming to consensus on the following questions:

  • Housing What types of housing should be available in Newton?
  • Fiscal Policy How can Newton achieve a balance amongst its mix of commercial and residential uses to address the full range of housing types that support a diverse population and meet (achieve, accomplish, ….) economic development goals?
  • Sustainability What makes a development project “sustainable,” and how important is this?
  • Zoning What are some effective ways to regulate land use & development through zoning?

(Each meeting will begin with a presentation about these four issues.)

Both meetings will be held in the NewTV Conference Room, 23 Needham Street, Newton Highlands.

Brown bag lunches or dinners welcome; coffee and dessert will be served.
