Questions and Answers
Question 1: What in your background prepares you to be effective in the political office you are seeking?
My professional and volunteer experience includes leadership and board-level roles at academic, educational and youth-focused organizations. I am a collaborative problem-solver and will bring strength to the School Committee as we navigate these difficult times. I have demonstrated I can be successful in complex organizations, I am strongly community focused, I am a team player and a fundraising expert. I have experience negotiating contracts, managing budgets, and overseeing safe, in-person learning during the pandemic. Lastly, as a parent of two NPS students, I have a strong personal investment in the success of our school system.
Question 2: If you're elected, what will be your first priority? Why? How will you address your priority?
First priority will be pandemic response – ensuring that learning gaps are addressed and that student and faculty mental health concerns are addressed. It is critical to gather data to know where and how students need help, and then to empower teachers to provide instruction to those students who need help. Mental health resources must be made available to the NPS community. This includes education about mental health care and how to receive support, communications to and forums with the NPS community to ensure that those who need it are able to access care.
Question 3: What is your plan to communicate the Newton schools’ plans, decisions, and programs to residents without children in Newton schools? How will you engage with them?
I have a strong track record of community involvement and engagement with residents in Newton that do not have children in the schools. I have been deeply involved in Newton civic life since I have lived here. Through in-person meetings, participation in events, contributing to email newsletters, engaging in on-line forums I will work hard to ensure residents’ are aware of and invested in the Newton Schools. I have strong relationships with community leaders across the city and can also work with those individuals to ensure we are reaching out to residents that are not parents of current NPS students.
