Questions and Answers
Question 1: What in your background prepares you to be effective in the political office you are seeking?
In my first term I have sought to be a careful listener in committee meetings and to provide a collaborative style of leadership, where I either find others already working on an issue or recruit others to join me before I move forward. That way, I am rarely going it alone, which is important in a body of 24.
Question 2: If you're elected, what will be your first priority? Why? How will you address your priority?
I’m always focused on providing constituent services to Ward 5 residents, especially around the quality and safety of our roads. I publish an email newsletter every week or so and try to send something by mail at least once a year, and I spend a lot of my time answering calls and emails from constituents and connecting them with appropriate city staff to help address a problem they have. I also walk the entire ward multiple times a year to see things firsthand.
Question 3: How will you make your decision to vote on a proposal that positively affects Newton overall but seems less so for all or part of your ward?
Typically I consult with Councilors representing other wards if a matter is a project specific to their ward and I feel I still don’t know enough about it after reading the Council packet materials. But in many cases proposals outside my ward still have an effect on residents in my ward because of where people’s kids attend school or which places they patronize as customers and so on. Anything that is good for the whole city of Newton will ultimately be good for the ward, but I do advocate for Ward 5 specific proposals like athletic fields, street redesigns, etc.
