Newton Special Election – Tuesday, March 16, 2021

February 21, 2021

Recently, two seats on Newton City’s Council became vacant due to the untimely death of City Councilor Allan “Jay” Ciccone, Jr. and the election of City Councilor Jake Auchincloss as U.S. Representative to Massachusetts’ 4th Congressional District.  A special election will be held to fill these seats:

  • City Council – Ward 1 At-Large
  • City Council – Ward 2 At-Large

Date of Special Election

The election will take place on Tuesday, March 16, 2021.   Read more below for information about the candidates, to date, who have announced their decision to run and on how to plan your vote.

Who are the candidates and how can Newton voters learn more?

So far, the candidates include:

  • Ward 1:
    John Oliver
    Madeline Ranalli
  • Ward 2:
    Bryan Barash
    Tarik Lucas
    David Micley

Ways to Vote

At the request of Mayor Ruthanne Fuller and the Newton City Council, Governor Charlie Baker filed a bill to all the use of mail-in, early and expanded absentee voting for this special election.

Baker’s bill states, “any eligible voter may vote early in-person for any special municipal election held on or after January 1, 2021 and before March 31, 2021 in the city of Newton.” Under the bill, the voting period for in-person early voting shall run from the “sixth business day before the special election until the close of business on the business day preceding the business day before the election.”

Mail-In Voting

Applications for mail-in voting must be received by March 10, 2021.  A completed and signed application is required for voters to receive a mail-in ballot.

Print out, sign, and mail your application to:

City Clerk
1000 Commonwealth Avenue
Newton, MA  02459

or

Drop it in one of the Drop Boxes at City Hall.

Once you receive your ballot…

  • Vote the ballot and place it in the ballot (inner) envelope
  • Sign the inner envelope (with your ballot inside)
  • Return your ballot in the mailing (outer) envelope provided.  Ballots can be mailed with proper postage or returned to an elections drop box at City Hall.

Please allow ample mailing time for your application and for the ballot. Ballots must be returned to your the Clerk’s Office by 8pm on Tuesday, March 16, 2020. 

In-Person Early Voting:  March 8 – 12, 2021 at City Hall

In-person early voting will be available Monday, March 8 to Friday, March 12 from 8:30am to 5:pm at City Hall.

Special Election Day Voting:  March 16, 2021

Vote at your polling location on March 16 from 7am to 8pm.  Find your Election Day polling location here.
