The recycling news below was emailed by Councilor Deb Crossley:
It’s great that Newton has a curbside recycling program – but it’s important that we all get recycling right… to prevent wasting your tax dollars on fines levied by waste management company – when we don’t. This year Newton’s recycling is found to contain about 18% non recyclable items and trash, and anything above 10% – results in monthly fines to the city. So let’s clean up our recycling! The City is taking a pro-active stance – beginning October 1 to check recycling containers to assure they contain only recyclable items… NO plastic bags, films or wrappings, NO food left in containers, NO liquids, textiles, toys or electronics. Spot checks that find contamination will result in a warning and explanation, so you’ll know what to do. But if a second check finds contamination, the recycling will not be picked up that week – until it is cleaned up. The only materials that belong in the green cart are empty bottles, jars, and containers made of metal, plastic and glass from the kitchen, laundry and bath, and paper and flattened cardboard. I know it can be difficult to get everyone in the family up to speed on this – I am the recycling manager/ monitor in our household – and it has taken some attention over the years to get it right. The City strives to do the right thing to keep our environment clean – Please help! |
