Many thanks to Newton’s State Delegation–LWVMA Day on the Hill update

Many thanks to Senator Cindy Creem, State Representatives Ruth Balser, Kay Khan, and John Lawn, and their staff for joining LWVN members on Tuesday, LWVMA’s Day on the Hill.

Senator Creem and Representative Patricia Haddad (5th Bristol District) lauded the League for its commitment to voting rights and citizen action.  Creem, who is the sponsor for AVR and a criminal justice reform bill repealing mandatory minimums, urged League members to continue their pressure on the legislature to pass those bills.  Haddad noted the voting reforms, including early voting, that the League was instrumental in passing in the past and noted that AVR is the next step in making it more convenient for people to vote.

Countdown to November 7th: can you spare an hour or two?

Another reason to vote YES on the charter: the myths of the home rule petition

LWVN strongly supports a YES vote for the charter commission proposal on November 7th.  In late September, however, a second proposal to reduce the City Council–by using a home-rule petition–was docketed by 14 members of the Newton City Council, and will be taken up in November if the YES votes do not prevail.  LWVN was concerned that this would create confusion by voters on November 7th (click here for our letter to the City Council).  A recent Newton TAB editorial identified this home-rule petition as a viable option–but we want to outline the improbability of such a petition being successful.
